Beta particles have a mass which is half of one thousandth of the mass of a proton (Figure 1) and carry a single negative charge. Beta-particles are emitted with a continuous energy spectrum ranging from near zero energy up to a maximum energy specific to each radionuclide.

Properties of Beta particles are-

1.They are highly energetic electrons which are released from inside of a nucleus.

2.They are negatively charged and have a negligible mass.

3.On the emission of a beta particle, a neutron in the nucleus divides into a proton and an electron. 

4. Beta particles can easily travel through the skin.
