state the reasons for the following:
a. iron articles get coated with a reddish brown powder when left for sometime in open.
b. burning of coal is an exothermic reaction.
c. the chemical equations should be balanced.

a) due to rusting. when iron is placed in open sometime it reacts with water and oxygen and make rusting. the formula for rusted iron is
Fe2O3 . xH2O

b) when bond between any compound break it releases energy. when we burn coal it react with oxygen , breaks the older bonds and Disintegrate in to CO2 and H2O. hence it is exothermic.

c) during the chemical reaction the law of conservation of mass should be preserved. thus the chemical equation should be balanced

The reaction is as
2Fe + O2 + H2O ------> Fe2O3.xH2O

b) The burning of coal is combustion reaction and it releases energy.
C + O2 ----> CO2
