A lunar eclipse occurs when the shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon. This happens when the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon with all three bodies arranged in a straight line. When the Moon is totally in the shadow of the Earth, it cannot be seen from the Earth. When a part of the Moon is in the Earth's shadow, part of the Moon can be seen while the rest is hard to see.
