The bacteria in the mouth acts upon the sugar from the food which gets stuck in our teeth after eating. The bacteria release acids to break down that sugar. The acid also acts on our tooth enamel and gradually weakens it, causing tooth decay. In fact, the tooth enamel is made up of Calcium Hydroxyapatite which is the hardest substance in the human body.

Tooth decay can be prevented by brushing the teeth with toothpaste after eating. Toothpastes are basic in nature and neutralize the acids released by the bacteria.
