Placenta plays a very important function in the development of the embryo.
- The organ provides nutrients for the developing embryo.
- It connects the fetus to the uterine wall for discharge of waste products.
- When an egg is not fertilized, the walls of the placenta shed, with heavy discharge of blood that clears itself out of the body of the woman in 3-5 days. The process starts at puberty and is called menstruation.
