Placenta plays a very important function in the development of the embryo.

  1. The organ provides nutrients for the developing embryo.
  2. It connects the fetus to the uterine wall for discharge of waste products.
  • When an egg is not fertilized, the walls of the placenta shed, with heavy discharge of blood that clears itself out of the body of the woman in 3-5 days. The process starts at puberty and is called menstruation.
