The sodium atom loses its outer electron to become a sodium ion. The sodium ion still has 11 protons (11positive charges). Therefore atomic number of sodium ion is also 11. but now only 10 electrons (10 negative charges).

The  basic electronic configuration of the element is governed by the number of electron in each of the shell of the atom.

Explanation:

  • 2n² is the rule that is to be followed for the maximum number of electrons in a given orbital where n is the number of electron orbital serial wise.
  • hence the number of electrons in the first shell is equal to 2 and the number of electron in the second shell is equal to 8.
  • since sodium has a total of 11 electrons then the third shell of sodium is equal to one electron which it loses during the formation of an ion.
