The rules which governed the propagation of a ray of light when it goes from one transparent medium to another are as follows:

  • The refraction of light takes place. Refraction refers to the bending of light when light travels from one medium to another.
  • The reason for refraction is that the speed of light is different in different mediums.
  • The rays of light bend toward the normal of the surface if the speed of light is less in the second medium in comparison to the first medium.
  • The rays of light bend away from the normal of the surface if the speed of light in the second medium is greater in comparison to the first medium.
