Status of women in the conservative industrial town can be gauged from the following:
- Industrialization did bring about a change in the value system of the society and family.
- With the availability of more job opportunities, traditional hierarchies in the society and family began to break, women who got employed felt alienated from their homes and developed isolation.
- Upper and middle class women also employed domestic servants who helped them in household work.
- Women from the lower class also started working.
- However, this was not acceptable to the conservative elements of the society who protested against their presence in the public sphere.
- It was only later, that women moved by the spirit of individualism, freedom liberty organised themselves in various movements demanding recognition, right to work, right to employment and other civil and political rights.
