and only in the special case buoyant force is equals to W

When Weight of the body is less than the buoyant force :-

  • The upthrust applied is more than than the weight, and hence, the body will float. Example-flotation of an air balloon in air.

When weight of the body is equal to the buoyant force :-

  • The body neither sinks nor floats.

When weight of the body is more than the buoyant force :-

  • The upthrust applied is less than the weight of the body, so it sinks. Example - an iron nail sinks in water.
