What Is A Hurricane?
A hurricane is a tropical cyclone that does lots of damage. It moves over the ocean and then onto land. Over the ocean it moves 10 - 20 mph, but on land it’s winds can be faster. The winds of the hurricane move counter clockwise around the eye of the hurricane. The eye is the center of a hurricane and it is the calmest part of a hurricane. Hurricanes end with rain storms.
What Is Needed In A Hurricane?
For a hurricane to happen there needs to be warm water (80° F or over). The winds need to come together pushing the air up. Then the winds drift out, above the storm. Humid air rising makes the storm clouds. Also, for a hurricane to form there needs to be light winds outside of the hurricane to steer it and let it grow.
Where Do Hurricanes Occur?
Hurricanes occur in places near oceans because oceans is where the hurricanes form. They occur during hurricane season which is June through November. Hurricanes occur over the Atlantic Ocean, Central America, and Mexico.

There are hurricane watches 24 - 36 hours before the expected landfall of the hurricane. Warnings are issued a few days in advance. Also, if you see heavy, stirring winds and really rough waters, there might be a hurricane coming toward you.
