Longitudes are known as meridian because in Geographical sense, meridian are great circles which are not parallel to each other but intersect each other at the North and South Poles. Same stands true of the longitudes. All longitudes are great circles which meet at the poles.

Lines of longitude are called as meridians and runs form north to south direction they meaure the east to west distances and are equal in length.
