They contest elections: In this elections many parties compete with each other for attaining highest number of votes.
The winning party forms and runs the government: In the elections, the party which attains the highest number of votes, forms the government. They make different ministers to run the government.
The losing party plays the role of oppsition: The party which doesn't get majority support of the people in the country, plays the role of opposition towards the winning party.
They make laws: The party that runs the government, plays a very important role by forming different laws helpful for the country,which are debated and passed in the legislature.
They put forward different policies and programmes: The parties put forward different ideas and policies in front of the the voters from which the voters have to choose. There a vast number of opinion given by the people of the country, which are reduced and the similar opinions are grouped together as a policy of the party.
They shape public opinion: The parties sometimes launch movements to resolve the problems of the people in the country. They try to raise and highlight issues in the country. This is how they shape public opinion.
