On applying heat to any material, it undergoes thermal expansion and contraction.
Explanation:
Advantages:
- With the application of thermal expansion, working of bi-metallic thermometers is possible. In thermostats, bimetallic strips are used which is a temperature-sensitive electrical contact. On heating, there is expansion in metals at different rates, which causes the strip to bend.
- In thermometers, mercury expands when temperature is more and degree is read on the instrument as a result of thermal expansion.
- Fish can get to live under ice in warm water because, due to thermal expansion, warm water gets trapped beneath the surface of ice.
Disadvantages:
- Railway lines requires expansion gaps so that buckling in hot weather can be avoided.
- When cars are moving quickly, the rubbing between the tires and the road increases the temperature of the air in the tires. This causes the tires to expand.
- Metal is regularly used in the human body for implants. Most implants need to be replaced over time because of thermal expansion and contraction.
