Hemoglobin is the protein in our red blood cells (RBCs) that plays a vital role in our bodies. The following are its major functions :

  1. The most important function of hemoglobin is the transportation of oxygen in our bodies. It binds with the oxygen in our lungs and transports it to all our body parts.
  2. Hemoglobin also collects carbon dioxide from various tissues and takes it to the lungs for exhalation.
  3. Hemoglobin acts as a buffer that is it maintains the pH of the blood at 7.4 increased amount of carbon dioxide can lead to a decrease in the pH. This stable pH makes it easy for any enzymatic reactions to take place.
