Triangle law of vector addition

  • Triangle law of vector addition: “When two vectors are represented in terms of magnitude and direction by two sides of a triangle taken in the same order then the third side of that triangle represents  the resultant of the vectors in terms of magnitude and direction.”
  • By using this law, the relation for magnitude and direction of resultant of two vectors is given as follows:
  • Step-wise vector addition of two vectors using Triangular law of vector addition is given as follows:
  • a: Consider the two vectors: A  and B
  • b: Connect the head of vector A to the tail of vector B. Therefore, the direction of vectors remain the same.
  • c: Connect the tail of vector A  to the head of vector B  using a straight line with an arrow pointing towards the head of vector B.
  • d: Thus this new vector is the resultant vector C, where C = A + B
