False

A Tibetan Buddhist lama Taranatha mentions that King Gopala 1 was elected by the people but his account is a form of legend (story/myth) and is not historically proven .

The historical record show that Gopala was elected by a group of chieftains.

King Gopala 1 (750-770 BCE) was the founder of the pala dynasty ( 750- 1161 BCE) in regions of Bihar and bengal.

"Pala" means protector and could be seen in the names of all pala monarchs.

Iama Taranatha legend- The legend says that after some period of turmoil which ensued with the death of King Shashanka, the people elected many kings but all were killed by Queen Naga ( half divine half human) after their election.

Gopala however killed the queen and took the throne.
