The two properties of carbon which lead to the huge number of carbon compounds we see around us are Catenation and Tetravalence.

Catenation :

  • Catenation can be defined as the bonding of carbon atom in the " same element " in a particular series.

Tetravalency :

  • In tetravalency, as name indicate that tetra means four. Four electron present in outer shell of orbit.

  • Due to this carbon neither lose nor gain electrons to complete it's octect. Thats why carbon shares it electrons.

  • So, it have the ability to bond with another 4 atoms.
