Poorly drained, heavy or waterlogged soil deprives roots of oxygen and indirectly causes wilting. When oxygen cannot penetrate compacted, wet soil, the roots stop functioning and cannot absorb water. Leaves at the top of the plant turn yellow and wilt due to lack of water, even though the plant is in waterlogged soil.
