Factors Affecting Liquid Pressure

The pressure at a point in a liquid depends on the following factors:

Height of the liquid column: The pressure due to a liquid at a point inside it increases with the the height of the liquid column above it.

Density of the liquid: The pressure due to a liquid is directly proportional to its density. Greater the density of the liquid more is the pressure exerted by it.

Additional Information:

Liquid pressure is measured using Manometer. It consists of U-shaped tube filled with some liquid.

A liquid exerts pressure on the walls of the container it is stored in. This pressure is known as the lateral pressure.

Consequences of Liquid Pressure:

  • The walls of the dams are made thicker at the bottom to withstand the greater lateral pressure of water as water exerts great pressure deep down.

  • The water supply tanks are made of greater heights as compared to the heights of the buildings in that area.

  • Deep-sea divers have to wear special suits to protect themselves from the large liquid pressure in the deep ocean.
