According to this act, Indians could be sent overseas for duty. In 1856, this act hurt the feelings of Brahmin soldiers as it was a taboo for a Brahmin to cross the sea as it didn't take in account the feelings of Brahmins soldiers.

The two features if the General service enlistment act of 1856---
1- It provided that all recruits to the Bengal army should be ready for service anywhere, whether within or outside India.
2- The Indian soldiers who are send outside the India were not even paid any extra allowances ( Bhatta ) for service outside India.
This act is passed by Lord Canning.
