State two main reasons for carbon forming a very large number of compounds

1. Catenation: The unique property of the carbon element to be able to form continuous links with other carbon atoms through covalency called catenation it is one reason for the existence of a large number of  compounds.

2. Tetravalency: The carbon atom's four valence electrons can be shared by other atoms that have electrons to share, thus forming covalent (shared-electron) bonds. They can even be shared by other carbon atoms, which in turn can share electrons with other carbon atoms and so on, forming long strings of carbon atoms, bonded to each other like links in a chain.

carbons has a unique nature which involves tetravalency , catenation and leading to formation of isomers . therefore carbons forms a large number of compounds
