The lithosphere is the strong layer of the Earth that allows the plates to move as coherent units. In the last few years, there has been a remarkable convergence toward a coherent picture of the nature of the lithosphere that is based on such diverse approaches as laboratory studies of rock deformation, earthquake depths and focal mechanisms in a variety of intraplate settings, the evolution of sedimentary basins, the topographic response to loading of the lithosphere by the formation of seamounts and volcanic islands, the shape of oceanic trenches and outer rises, and the statistical relationship between topography and gravity. Although it is has long been known that the surface layers of the Earth are strong enough to support large loads without complete, local isostatic compensation, our understanding of the factors controlling the rigidity of the lithosphere in different tectonic settings is now approaching the point where we can make useful quantitative predictions.
