the two methods for determining the age of fossils are:
⋆ finding out the depth of the fossil found. lower strata is for old fossils and upper strata is for new fossils.
⋆ finding out the content of carbon isotope in the fossils and comparing it to the actual one.

hope it helps :)

relative dating and radiometric dating

1st method: relative age of fossils can be found by comparing the depths at which they are buried. fossils closer to the surface are newer while those buried deeper are older. the layers of soil in which they are buried can also be compared: a higher layer reflects a newer fossil while a lower layer reflects an older fossil.
2nd method: comparing isotopes of elements in the fossils. this is known as carbon dating as it compares the ratio of 14C to 12C in the fossil to the ratio found in living organisms. after a period of time, 14C in compounds in the fossil will start decaying (as it is radioactive) to 12C and the ratio will decrease.
