By painting the surface of iron and galvanization methods are used to prevent rusting of iron.

Explanation:

Rusting of iron is a formation of iron oxide that occurs over long time period when iron or any other alloys which are containing iron like steel metal is directly exposed to atmospheric oxygen and moisture.  

When oxygen reacts with iron for long period, it forms a fresh compound called an oxide which weakens the actual bonds existing in the metal atom.

By painting surface of metal, it is not exposed to the atmospheric oxygen which prevents rusting. In Galvanization process, iron metal is coated by zinc.
