Nuclear fusion and fission are the processes by which the nucleus of an atom gains (fusion) or loses (fission) protons, transforming into a different type of atom. Both processes release energy. Nuclear fusion and fissionoccur in nature, for example, within a star, and artificially, for example in anuclear reactor.

Fission is the breaking apart of an atom into smaller atoms. Fusion is the creation of larger atoms from smaller ones. Both processes are difficult to initiate because they occur in the atomic nucleus. Both release copious amounts of energy.
