Speed is the rate at which an object covers distance. It doesn't depend on direction. Hence it is a scalar quantity

Speed is a scalar quantity.

EXPLANATION:

Scalar quantities are the ones that can be described by their magnitude without the need of direction.

Vector quantities are the ones in which magnitude and direction is needed for their description. Speed can be described by how fast or how slow a body is moving irrespective of the direction in which the body is moving. A body can be moving in any direction with some speed and therefore, speed is a scalar quantity.
