State whether the following statements are true or false (a) A sodium ion has positive charge because it has more protons than a neutral atom.
(b) A chloride ion has negative charge because it has more electrons than a neutral atom.

Explanation:

(a) Sodium ion is a monovalent inorganic cation, an alkali metal cation that can be taken from sodium. When compared to the number of neutrons a sodium ion has, the number of electrons is lesser. Thus, it carries a positive charge.

(b) Chloride ion forms the negatively charged parts of some salts. It is very important for transmitting nerve impulses, maintaining acid/base balance and for the flow of liquids in and out of the cells. A chloride ion has more electrons than neutrons. So, it carries a negative charge.
