Oxidation happens when:

electron is lost

oxygen is added

electronegative element is added

hydrogen is removed

Reduction happens when:

Electron is added

oxygen is removed

electropositive element is added

hydrogen is added

1. Pb lost 2 electrons, so, oxidation has taken place

2. one electron is lost from iron, so, oxidation has taken place

3. The element A has gained one electron, so, reduction has taken place

4. Copper lost 2 electrons, so, oxidation has taken place

In Oxidation,

  • electron is lost ( + charge for the electron)
  • oxygen is added  (O)
  • electronegative element is added
  • hydrogen is removed  (H)

In Reduction,

  • electron is added  ( - charge for the electron)
  • oxygen is removed
  • electropositive element is added
  • hydrogen is added

In the first reaction,

  • Pb lost 2 electrons and became Pb²⁺
  • ∴ oxidation takes place  here.

In the second reaction,

  • Fe²⁺ lost 1 electron and became Fe³⁺
  • ∴ oxidation has taken place

In the third reaction,

  • A³⁺ gained 1 electron and became A²⁺
  • ∴ reduction has taken place

In the fourth reaction,

  • Cu lost 2 electrons and became Cu²⁺
  • ∴ oxidation has taken place
