Answer: Nitric acid not used in the laboratory preparation of hydrogen. This is because nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent, and oxidises hydrogen gas to convert it into the water. ... sulphuric acid and dilute hydrochloric acid do not oxidise hydrogen into water hence preferred for the preparation of hydrogen gas.

Hydrogen cannot be prepared by using conc. HNO3 because HNO3 decomposes into [O](nascent oxygen). This oxygen reacts with hydrogen to form water.
HNO3 ------->NO2 + H2O+[O]
[O]+ H2 ----------->H2O.
HNO3 ------->NO2 + H2O+[O]
[O]+ H2 ----------->H2O.
