When carbon dioxide is passed through freshly prepared lime water for a short time,it turns lime water milky due to formation of a white precipitate of calcium carbonate.
The reaction can be expressed as---
Ca(OH)2 + CO2--------CaCO3 + H2O
This test is often done to determine the presence or evolution of co2 while any experiment.
On the other hand, when carbon dioxide gas is passed through lime water for a long time ,then a soluble salt of calcium hydrogen carbonate is formed and the solution becomes clear again.
The reaction is can be expressed as::
CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O --------Ca(HCO3)2
