The sodium metal gives bubbles of a gas and generates a large amount of heat. This heat causes the sodium to melt to give a silvery globule which darts about on the surface of the water giving out a large amount of heat energy.

The gas that is formed when lit burns with a characteristic pop sound.

When phenolphthalein indicator is added, it turns deep pink immediately indicating that the solution is highly alkaline.
