Statement I: Sulphuric acid is used in the manufacture of fertilizers. Statement II: Nitric acid is used in the purification of metals such as gold and silver.

1 point

1. Statement-I is True, Statement-2 is True; Statement-II is a correct explanation for Statement-I.

2. Statement-I is True, Statement-II is True: Statement-II is NOT a correct explanation for Statement-I.

3. Statement-I is True, Statement-II is False.

The correct option among the following is:

 \large{ \leadsto{ \boxed{ \bold{ \orange{OPTION \: B}}}}}

Both the statements are correct, But statement II is not an correct explanation of Statement I, Infact it is not related to Statement I.

☕ Reason:

  • Sulphuric acid is used in fertilizers because it contains Sulphur which is very important as a nutrient for plants.
  • Nitric acid is used in making Aqua Regia( Hydrochloric acid : Nitric acid = 3 : 1). This can dissolve metals like Gold an silver, Hence help in its purification.
  • Statement I is about uses of Sulphuric acid and Statement II is about uses of Nitric acid. So, There is no explanation of Statement I in Statement II.

Explain more !!

As the above question is about acids, here are the characteristics properties shown by Acids:

  • Acid is sour in taste.
  • When dissolved in water, they release Hydrogen ion(H+) or Hydronium ions(H₃O⁺).
  • It turns blue litmus to red.
  • It's aqueous solution conducts electricity.
  • It reacts with active metals like Na, K, Ca and Zn that are at top of reactivity series.
  • They neutralized bases. (Neutralization)
  • They reacts with carbonates and release Carbon dioxide(CO2).
  • Their pH ranges from 1 to 7.
  • On the basis of origin, they are of two types. Organic and Mineral acids.
