Retroviruses are the animal viruses that have single-stranded RNA as genetic material and replicate through a DNA intermediate. There are two copies of the ssRNA molecules.

The life cycle of the retrovirus proceeds by the reverse transcription of the RNA genome into double-stranded DNA which is inserted into the host genome. In the cytosol, ssRNA genome is reverse transcribed into dsDNA by the enzyme reverse transcriptase. It is RNA dependent DNA polymerase that uses RNA as a template to synthesize DNA.
