STATES OF MATTER
When we look at the matter around us, we find that it is in three forms. These are solid, liquid and gas.
.
All human beings are outwardly solids. The water which we daily drink is a liquid while the air we
breath in represents a gas. The three states of matter that we have mentioned are because of the
interparticle spaces present in different kinds of matter,
Let us briefly discuss the characteristics of the three states of matter which we have listed.
The Solid State : Solids are known for their hardness and rigid nature which has definite shape and
definite volume. The important characteristics of the solid state are
i) Solids have definite shape and volume.
Solids are generally rigid. If some solid (such as rubber) changes
its shape on the applications of external force, then it regains its
shape, on the removal of force.
iii) Solids can have any number of free surfaces,
iv) The intermolecular spaces are very small.
