On finding mean of ungrouped data

Find a if the mean of

(a) 6 , 16 , a , 12 is 14

(b)12 , 0 , 10 , 16 , a is 11

We know that


Mean=sum of observations/no of observations

6+16+a+12/4=14


=34+a=14*4

=a=56-34

=a=22

12+10+0+16+a/5=11

=38+a=55

=a=55-38

=a=17
