Undoubtedly the city folks are far richer than their brethren in the villages. They have a much higher standard of living. However, as the Human Development Index has shown, well being is not just a factor of material wealth. While people in the city may have made money, the leisure time available has come down, the quality of our relationships has come down. Besides, due to industrial development, the quality of air has depleted. In fact, a couple o years back, Beijing ordered its citizens to stay indoors for a week due to the high levels of air pollution.
