When Levi Strauss sold his first pair of jeans, they were not blue pants or denim.
He was 21, a recent immigrant from Bavaria, when he landed in San Francisco in
1850.He wanted to raise cash by working in the gold mines. He end-up providing pants
for the miners there. The miner there had the toughest pair of brown canvas pants in

the whole country. Soon other gold miners came around looking for those pants of
Levi's. Within a few years, he switched from canvas to French denim , reputed to be
the strongest fabric in the world. He later added the indigo day that gives the blue
colour in the blue jeans. Meanwhile, Jacob Davis, a tailor in Nevada, came up with the
idea of copper - buttoned pockets. Miners could kept loading ore into their pockets
without ripping them off. Davis knew he had a good thinhg, so he went down to see
Levi Strauss in San Francisco. It became what we today know of Levi Strauss jeans. It
was commonly said, “You can buy Levi's for a dollar, but can't buy Levi Strauss for a
million dollars."
