They first arrived in the British Isles in the Middle Ages, though their ancestors set out from India long before that. Originally, they were entertainers, acrobats, jugglers and musicians. It's been calculated that there are fifty to sixty thousand gypsies in Britain but there are very few families that follow the traditional way of life-not more than a dozen or so. That way of life means living in a horse-drawn caravan, and cooking meals outdoors on the open fire, no matter what the weather is like. But the vast majority of gypsies have moved into towns and use cars and lorries these days. Some Romanies still on the road, live for most of the year by selling home-made products like baskets and wooden pegs and at harvest time they do seasonal work on farms. Apart from that, they have pursued their old trade as horse dealers. The horse fairs in the west and the north-west of England are still their gathering points.
