Answer:

What we don’t want to talk about is what we should think about now and then to obtain more clarity about life and its meaning. Humans dread discussing two things which are the normal condition of human life — death and failure. That is, nobody can evade death or failure.

When we ask a successful businessman, author, artist, or a sportsperson, about the secret of their success we hear so many stories about perseverance, hard work, work ethics and so on. People try to imitate their success formulas only to find that they have not succeeded.

We don't hear how successful people failed so many times before they finally tasted success. We see the final plot of the story. We don't see the beginning and the middle where so many nasty and forgettable things happened to the protagonist.

We hear about the Harry Potter bestsellers. We don't hear how the author struggled with rejections from publishers. Success begets more success. Suddenly people began to see great qualities and themes in the Harry Potter series which became obvious only after it became a bestseller. Harry Potter became famous because it was Harry Potter.

Monala Lias is the most famous painting in the world. But it is not the best painting in the world. We equate fame with quality and merit. Monal Lisa was languishing for centuries in obscurity till the early 20th century. Till then, nobody had heard about. It took a burglary in 1911 to catapult the Monal Lisa into eternal fame. Suddenly critics began to discover great things about the painting. An accident was enough to turn a great painting into a masterpiece. Monal Lisa is famous because it is Mona Lisa.

So luck also plays a role in success although successful people will not admit it. Success has many fathers, failure is an orphan. No successful people will admit that luck also played a part in their achievements.

In fact, failure always precedes success. This natural sequence of life is something we refuse to acknowledge despite the evidence we have before us.

There is something enticing and captivating about success stories. We don't like to hear about how a successful person struggled to reach his final destination. It is as if human fallibility is only a myth and success awaits anybody who tries his best notwithstanding the life conditions that shape our destinies.

This doesn't mean that hard work plays no role at all in achieving success. But not all hard working people succeed. Sometimes one needs the right connections and the right breaks to succeed. One also needs tons of luck.

We must learn to fail gracefully before we try to reap success. To succeed without tasting failure first is impossible.

When we learn a new skill like cycling or diving or swimming, we make many mistakes before we finally master the skill. In other words, we failed many times before we succeeded in honing the skill.

What is obvious doesn’t appear attractive enough to hold our attention. We need storytelling to accept certain harsh facts about life.

We can overcome atychiphobia, or fear of failure if accept the simple fact and unacknowledged universal law that failure precedes success.
