First, let’s redefine the question to ask how many tissue progenitor cells are there in the adult body. Depending upon tissue type, this can range from as high as 5% to less than 1%. With age, this number can decrease. The precise number would depend upon how many cells there are in the body.

Second, I think the important underlying question is, with so many millions of stem/progenitor cells, why do we suffer from degenerative illnesses or fail to replace many tissues?
