Stem
- The stem is a part of a plant.
- It mostly grows straight above the ground but can grow under the ground or along the ground.
- Stems support and give rise to leaves, flowers, fruits and buds.
- They conduct water and nutrients from the roots to other parts of the plant.
- Stems are also storage organs of plants.
- Most plants have stems. However, plants like liverworts, hornworts and mosses do not have stems.
- Stems of different plants differ in size and appearance. Some plants have short stems and others have tall stems.
- The leaves, buds, branches and flowers grow from certain points on the stem known as nodes.
- The space between two nodes is known as internode.
- Stems consist of conducting tissues arranged in columns. They are the water-conducting tissue or xylem and the food-conducting tissue or phloem. They are known as vascular bundles.
