Stems get modified to perform different functions. It acts as organs of perennation to tide over conditions unfavourable for growth e.G axillary buds of stems get modified into woody, straight and pointed thorns. In gourds (cucumber, pumpkins, watermelon) and grapevines stem tendrils help plants to climb. Stems also get modified to store food e.G stems of potato, ginger, turmeric etc

They also act as organs of perennation to tide over conditions unfavourable for growth. Modifications for support: Stem tendrils which develop from axillary buds, are slender and spirally coiled and help plants to climb such as in gourds (cucumber, pumpkins, watermelon) and grapevines.
