Stephen Spender’s poem begins by describing the plight and the poverty of the children living in the slums. He gives a detailed description of different children with their own problems. However by the concluding stanza, we see a shift in his opinion. He states that the miserable conditions of the children living in slums can be improved. If the people from the higher ranks of the society give them an opportunity to receive proper education, they could be brought out of the catacomb of poverty and guided towards the horizon of a better future.
