1. The candidates announce their presidential bid, and announce on which party they are running

2. They campaign a lot and have debates

3. Primaries start, and some people drop out

4. Primaries end, and usually there is one winner that has the most electors (this year it is Joe Biden and Donald Trump)

5. They have the party conventions and formally pick their nominees (I say formally because it is usually well known who has more delegates before the convention)

6. There are some debates, and lots of campaigning before the election.

7. The election is held on the first Tuesday of November.

8. There is counting, and usually past midnight on the election day, the results are broadcast all over the news.

9. January of the following year is the inauguration, and the new President takes office!
