Einstein. Why? He had none of the technology that Hawking used (i.e. computers) nor the much wealthier institutions to fund Hawking’s ideas. In fact, Hawking struggled and lost against Einstein’s theories on numerous occasions. Einstein was practically a nobody and hardly noticed at a young age, while Hawking was groomed from birth. Further, Einstein was even labeled with a “speech” problem at the same age that Hawking was said to be an early genius. No contest. The mere fact that Einstein overcame such gross elitism is a testament to his overwhelming and virtually unstoppable contributions. Hawking is certainly a genius, however, I think that anyone who compares these two as equals has some serious bias. Einstein used pen, paper, and a typewriter and changed the world. Hawking used computational modeling and still struggled to find a winning argument against Einstein’s theories. Einstein also died much poorer than Hawking btw. Hawking tried and failed to rise to Einstein. Period.
