Thank you for asking the question.
Backlash in screw gauge can be avoided by rotating the screw slowly in direction only.

Sometimes due to wear and tear of screw thread, by reversing the direction of rotating the thimble, the tip of the screw does not start moving immediately but remains stationary for a part of rotation it is called backlash error.
Also , backlash error can be cured by not rotating the circular scale immediately to the other direction but instead wait for it until scale stabilize.

Backlash error in a screw gauge usually occurs when there is a wear and tear of the screw threads. When this happens, if the thimble is rotated in the opposite direction, the screw tip does not move in the same direction for some time. In other words, the tip remains stationary while the thimble rotates for a brief period of time. This causes an error in the reading that is called backlash error.

To overcome backlash error, the screw must be rotated only in one direction. It must not be rotated in both directions repeatedly.
