He found what has become known as Stokes' Law: the drag force F on a sphere of radius a moving through a fluid of viscosity η at speed v is given by: F=6πaηv. Note that this drag force is directly proportional to the radius.Like other frictional forces, viscous forces oppose the relative motion of adjacent fluid layers. Whereas solid frictional forces are approximately independent of velocity, viscous forces increase with velocity.The property of a fluid due to which it opposes the relative motion between its different layers is called viscosity and the force between the layers opposing the relative motion is called viscous force.
