Stanza 1:-
One evening the poet stops his horse driven carriage along a country road to view the snowfall in the woods. He says that he knows the person who owns the woods and that his house is in the village and may not see the poet admire the woods filling up with the snow.
Stanza 2:-
The poet imagines that his horse might think it strange to make a stop between the woods and the frozen lake, where there is no farmhouse nearby and that too on the darkest evening of the year.
Stanza 3:-
He imagines that the horse shakes its harness bells to enquire whether there there is any mistake in stopping by the woods.Further the poet says that besides the sound of the bells, the only other sound is that of the easy wind.
Stanza 4:-
The poet says that although the woods are attractive,he can't stay there any longer as he has a number of promises to keep and many miles to travel before he sleeps or takes rest.
