Stories based on proverbs strike the iron when it is hot
Answers
The story of the ant and the grasshopper is one of the best stories to illustrate the proverb “Strike while the iron is hot”.
An ant was busy throughout the summer collecting food to stock for use during the rainy winter season. A grasshopper spent its time lazing about and kept making fun of the ant for doing this. However, the ant did not pay heed to this and went about minding its own business.
Later, when winter set in, the ant kept itself cozy in its anthill and made use of the supplies that it had collected during summer. On the other hand, the grasshopper not only felt cold but could not find any food for itself to satisfy its hunger. Finally, it went to the ant and asked for some food. But, the ant turned the grasshopper away saying that it had enough food only for itself.
The ant made best use of the opportunity it had during the summer season to stock food for winter. However, the grasshopper did not do this. The proverb “Strike while the iron is hot” means that one should make use of an opportunity that he/she is given, else it may be of no use later.
