the lost key

Allie! Allie! ALLIE!!” Mum barked up the stairs, her voice echoing through the silent hallway. I groaned. It was six-thirty in the morning and the sun was barely up. I’m sure that mum needs my help again. Slowly, I dragged my feet down the timber stairs. Mum was in the living room, frantic.

“Where are my keys? Allie, did you see them?” Mum said, her voice rising.

I shrugged. Last time when mum lost her keys, we searched the entire house for a day. My father soon realized that it may have gone down the toilet. We went to the sewage building and a few hours later, Mum came back with a very clean set of keys. I suppose she boiled them… but after that she was careful not to put them in the bathroom.

“Oh! I’m going to be so late!” Mum wailed

I looked around the house. The last time I saw the keys, they were on the front door’s handle. It can either mean dad or burglars. Dad has his own keys, and if there were burglars, I would’ve heard them. It can only mean…

“Tolly!” I whispered, remembering that my new puppy was mischievous and extremely active.

I sprinted up the stairs and realized that Tolly was sleeping in my parent’s room. I bombarded in and I heard a faint yelp and a tinkle of clashing metal. I opened the cupboard and Tolly, my tiny Yorkshire terrier was looking back at me innocently, the copper keys dangling form his mouth.

“Naughty Tolly!” I scolded him. Tolly whined piteously. I bounded down the stairs and tossed the keys to mum.

“Don’t lose them again, mum!” I shouted, grinning.

“Tut tut!” Mum tutted before opening the door, slamming it shut behind her
